Air Filter Care
Air Filter Care Guide
The air filter is the easiest part of your system to care for, and one of the most important.
Finding your filter
Filters are usually in a slot near the furnace or air handler, or behind a large return grille on a wall or ceiling. The size is printed on the frame of the current filter.
How often to check
Many homeowners check monthly and replace every one to three months. Homes with pets, recent renovation dust, or allergies may benefit from checking more often. Follow your system and filter manufacturer guidance.
- Hold the filter up to light. If light barely passes through, it is time.
- Note the airflow arrow and install it pointing toward the equipment.
- Write the replacement date on the frame.
Why it matters
A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can make rooms feel less comfortable and cause the system to run longer.
