Heating Preparation
Heating Tips for Colder Months
A little preparation in early fall helps your home stay warm and steady when temperatures drop.
Before the first cold night
Run your heat briefly on a mild day in early fall. A faint dusty smell on first use is common. A persistent burning smell is worth noting and discussing with a qualified technician.
Keep the area around equipment clear
Furnaces and heaters need space. Avoid storing boxes, paint, or cleaning supplies near heating equipment.
- Leave open space around the furnace or air handler.
- Keep vents and baseboard heaters free of rugs and curtains.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms each season.
Comfortable winter thermostat habits
Lowering the setpoint a few degrees while you sleep or are away can reduce how long the system runs. Layered bedding and closed curtains at night help hold warmth inside.
